Scope
SGA designed a bridge across the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz, California, to provide a safe, continuous connection for cyclists and pedestrians between the east and west levee trails, while also accommodating emergency response and maintenance access. As part of the planning and design process, SGA conducted a comprehensive analysis of travel patterns, noise levels, geometric constraints, sight lines, hydraulics, subsurface conditions, and environmental impacts to determine the optimal bridge alignment.
The firm conducted visual modeling for 12 potential structure types, performed preliminary engineering and cost analyses for eight options, and developed presentation models for four, ultimately recommending a cantilevered haunched concrete box girder spanning the entire river. This structure type was selected for its sleek, low-profile form, its compatibility with the natural contours of the river channel, and its ability to remain clear of floodwaters and debris. To achieve a single-span solution, the design incorporated backspan counterweights that eliminated the need for in-channel supports, further minimizing environmental impact.
