Sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (SCCRTC), Santa Cruz County’s Mar Vista Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing would connect the beach, mountain trails, schools, homes, and businesses on opposite sides of Highway 1. For the Project Approval and Environmental Document phase of the project, SGA developed a variety of alignment alternatives within tight geometric constraints to provide an accessible 12-foot-wide bridge, preserve entrances into adjacent private properties and neighborhoods, and minimize impacts on existing heritage trees and wetlands. Since the project would introduce a large new transportation structure into a fully built-out residential streetscape, SGA conducted thorough pre-design work by reviewing survey data and conducting eight focus meetings to engage the community and solicit input.
