SGA developed and assessed four alignment alternatives to study the feasibility of a new bike/ped bridge over Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek, CA, to connect to the city’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station. SGA’s findings indicated that a new bridge serving pedestrians and cyclists could be cost-effective, attractive, and easy to use, such that it would generally be favored over crossing at-grade. SGA combined a conceptual plan for future BART station transit-oriented development project with aerial imagery to produce a base map, and the bridge concept recommended for further study solved geometric constraints related to the site topography. Since Ygnacio Valley Road is depressed by approximately 10 feet relative to the BART rail, a lower bridge structure could be achieved with half the length of the ramping structure, which would reduce wind and seismic loading, as well as costs associated with the structure and foundations.
