The Pacific Commons Bridge in Fremont, CA, would provide cyclists and pedestrians with a safer way to cross Highway 880 and avoid the busy interchange at Auto Mall Parkway. The bridge would connect the San Francisco Bay Trail, Pacific Commons Shopping Center, and over 100 acres of planned commercial development, with existing light industrial and offices, the Warm Springs/South Fremont Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station, 4,000 planned residential units, and over 2.4 million square feet of planned commercial space. SGA studied cable-stayed, suspension, and tied-arch structure types for the bridge’s main span, and recommended an asymmetrical cable-stated alternative for further study to complement the existing bridge at the BART station, while solving geometric constraints related to spanning the highway and a water district drainage channel and ensuring adequate clearance from high-voltage power transmission lines. In addition to an iconic bridge, project components include new bike/ped facilities along local streets to connect to the touchdowns.
