SGA’s design for the Adobe Creek Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge was unanimously declared by Palo Alto’s City Council as the winner of a design competition that drew interest from 60 teams and resulted in 20 design submissions. As a link between the Baylands Nature Preserve and the built environment, the bridge design’s undulating forms sweep over Highway 101 and float over wetlands to offer unique views and carry a natural aesthetic into the urban streetscape. The innovative structural system of the bridge was based on conventional steel girders that required no special detailing or construction techniques. Materials were chosen for long-term maintenance benefits and detailed to prevent bird collisions and predatory bird perching spots. Gentle geometry throughout the project meant that users of all abilities could enjoy a safe and comfortable experience, resulting in a Silicon Valley landmark that would be exciting yet respectful of the context, timelessly modern, and cost-effective. Although the city ultimately chose a steel truss structure type for the bridge’s main span due to funding constraints, the alignment and viewing areas from SGA’s original design were retained.
