SGA developed a concept for a bike/ped bridge over Crow Canyon Road in San Ramon, CA, to serve users of the Iron Horse Trail, improve safety, and encourage walking and biking. One of the design goals was to make the pedestrian experience as inviting and convenient as possible. To achieve this, SGA created visually open central stairways close to the sidewalks. The stairs also act as a compression strut to support the deck. To achieve the City’s vision for a new bridge that is complementary to the existing bike/ped bridge at Bollinger Canyon Road approximately one mile away, SGA adapted the architectural vocabulary of the existing cable-stayed bridge to the grammar of the arch bridge. In SGA’s design, the Bollinger bridge’s distinctive V-shaped supports for the main span are subtly transformed and tilted to serve as both vertical supports and horizontal restraints to help counteract the thrust of the arch. References to successful visual elements of the existing bridge, such as the plant palette, railing, deck edge profile, and light fixtures, also help to tie the two projects together and create a new and elegant landmark.
