In 2013, the Berkeley Tuolumne Camp was largely destroyed by the Rim Fire, one of the largest and most damaging wildfires in California history. Prior to the fire, the camp was a residential summer family camp operating since 1922, with full recreation and outdoor education programs and daily activities, serving an average of 250 campers a day and over 4,000 visitors each summer. SGA was asked to design and assess concepts for a replacement footbridge in the center of the camp that would be accessible, connect the banks of the Tuolumne River, provide seasonal access to an island, and offer opportunities for carrying utilities across the river. With consideration for user circulation, views, camp style, site geometry, and environmental sensitivity in the floodplain, SGA explored low-profile stressed-ribbon, suspension, and cable-stayed single-span bridge structure alternatives and recommended further study of the ribbon concept. However, due to unanticipated geotechnical and construction challenges at the site, the city chose to install a three-span footbridge with prefabricated trusses.
