SGA designed a new bicycle and pedestrian route along Highway 580 and over the Chevron fuel refinery in Richmond, CA, to connect the Point Richmond neighborhood to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Developed in two segments, the project closed a gap in the San Francisco Bay Trail, provided access to the bay shoreline and views, and replaced the existing bicycle-only access on I-580 with an accessible shared-use path.
The complex constraints of existing refinery and freeway infrastructure, steep topography, and waterfront conditions required that the project include two long bicycle and pedestrian bridges over sensitive security areas, and that the trail negotiate hillsides, retaining walls, and highway structures. The different environments adjacent to the project also required SGA to identify and design four railing and fencing conditions for security and safety, while maximizing visual transparency.
To facilitate constructability over the refinery, the 800-foot bridge design uses long-span precast concrete girders.
To aid in the development, assessment, and presentation of project alternatives, SGA constructed two physical models, which were placed on extended display in the lobby of Richmond City Hall.
