San Lorenzo River Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge

Santa Cruz, California

This new bridge establishes a safe link over the San Lorenzo
River for cyclists and pedestrians by connecting the East and West Levee Trails. The project includes an art component, as well as design of new connecting trails under state highway 1 and through adjacent green spaces.

SGA determined the most suitable location for the bridge by facilitating 2 public meetings and through careful analysis of
existing patterns of travel, noise levels, urban geometry, sight lines, hydraulics, subsurface conditions, and environmental impacts. The chosen alignment ties directly into proposed and existing bicycle and pedestrian routes and formally relates to these routes rather than to automobile streets.
SGA did visual modeling studies for 12 structure types, preliminary engineering and cost analyses for eight, and presentation modeling for four of these.
